Ashiyu - Foothbath
Ashiyu are footbaths where you can enjoy Nozawa Onsen’s hot spring water simply by taking off your shoes, rolling up your trousers and soaking your feet.
Near Ogama, you will find an ashiyu called Yurari, which is open during spring, summer and autumn.
In Japan, it is often said that half-body bathing — soaking only the lower half of the body — can be gentler on the body. Soaking your whole body in hot water, as you would in a regular bath, places water pressure on the entire body, which may put additional strain on the heart and lungs for people with certain health conditions.
Ashiyu offer a more relaxed alternative, allowing you to enjoy the hot spring water for longer while sitting comfortably.
They are very simple to use — all you need to do is take off your shoes. An ashiyu is a lovely way to rest tired feet and refresh yourself before heading home after a day in Nozawa Onsen.
