The chef, Kensaku Katagiri trained at a Michelin star restaurant in Osaka.He uses his French cuisine skill as his base with a twist of Japanese essence to create his own imaginative style of cuisine.He strives to offer an unprecedented approach to the dining experience by utilising the abundance of local ingredients and mountain vegetables of the area.He emphasizes no preservatives, and no artificial additives in his food.Vegan or vegetarian meals can also be arranged provided reservation is made at least two days in advance.

IZAKAYA TSUKUSHINBO

Tsukushinbo is traditional local Japanese Izakaya, located in the basement of Tokiwaya ryokan next to Oyu onsen. We serve a variety of snacks and light meals with local produce featuring heavily, including Grilled iwana (trout), Shinshu Salmon, and even a good selection of sashimi from the sea of Japan. Of course we have ice cold beer and hot sake, but be sure to try the fresh ruby-red grapefruit chu-hi, with a side serve of fried shiso and cheese spring rolls!

Jisaku is a small Izakaya style Japanese restaurant located opposite Craft shop Sankyu. We serve a great variety of Japanese bar snacks and light meals including some very good vegetarian options. There is a mix of western and Japanese tatami seating. Jisaku is a great place to have a slow dinner where you relax and share everything on the menu with friends. A must try is the Nagaimo steak- large Japanese style rosti/ hashbrown made with the sticky Nagaimo potato. It goes perfectly with a side of stir- fried Shimeji mushrooms.

Kawahiro is a family run ski lodge and restaurant right on the snow in front of the Nagasaka gondola station, with a convenient rental shop attached. Our spacious restaurant is also open to outside guests during the day and serves a variety of good value Japanese traditional dishes including 'Tendon', 'Katsudon', 'Soba', and 'Udon'. Be sure to drop in and try.

Kuan is a small Japanese Izakaya located underneath Kaze no ie Italian restaurant just below Oyu onsen at the end of the mainstreet. We serve a variety of local sake and shochu, and of course ice cold beer. We have a good range of Japanese bar snacks and light meals. There are several small tables, counter seating and a small private space at the rear. Be sure to drop in for a genuine Japanese pub experience!

Libushi is a tap-room attached to Nozawa's own craft brewery AJB Co. Owned and operated by Tom and Emiko, Libushi is a perfect spot to cool down after a hot onsen. We have a small brewery just behind the bar area and a much larger brewery near the river making a wide variety of Ales, Stouts, Porters, Sours, and more that you can try on tap in the outlet. We also have a range of bottled beer so you can take your favourite type home with you.

Food

Denbey is a family run, ski-in ski-out lodge at the bottom of the Utopia chair lift, with easy access to the Japan ski museum and the Hikage area kids park. It features a large natural hot spring bath located behind the main accommodation, in a log cabin at the edge of the forest. There is also an outdoor terrace hot tub where you can sit back, relax and watch the snow fall. The restaurant is open to ski resort guests during the day, and serves a variety of locally grown produce for in-house guests in the evening.

Lodge Hahnenkamm is a family run, ski-in ski-out lodge, at the Isemiya slopes area, opposite the Japan ski museum. Set at the edge of the cedar forest, it is a great relaxing location to spend a weekend in the mountains in winter or summer. (Dinners at the in-house restaurant can be had by appointment.)

Nappa cafe is a cozy cafe decorated with an eclectic selection of figurines, cats, dolls and other collectables. The walls have many photos of Nozawaonsen street scenes from the black and white era. We serve a simple but very good lunch menu, great coffee, cake and other desserts. The Otona-set (Adult set) is a small plate of snack items served with either a Heartland draft beer or Local sake-be sure to try!

Jiyūgekijyo is a unique little bar serving a variety of beers and sake in an old strip club. It is located down the street from Yokochi onsen opposite the police station. We serve a range of skewered meats and vegetables that you can grill over your own coal pit. Be sure to drop in and check out this very cool little bar in an interesting old building.

Buna is a popular mountain eatery located half way down the Paradise course where on sunny days, they boast some of the best views on the mountain. Offering a variety of Japanese and western inspired dishes, Buna is a local favorite. Their popular home-made curries are a must try, and be sure to enjoy their Oyaki steamed dumplings, or just relax with some wine and cheese.
